The ZS Pro is a B-segment compact SUV competing in a highly competitive segment and best described as a premium value offering from MG.

Having returned to local shores a year ago, MG has been solidifying its presence in Mzansi and building customer confidence.

The Chinese manufacturer recently hosted an “immersion into the MG brand” driving the MG ZS Pro Luxury and MG3 models.

New products mooted

The ZS Pro is a B-segment compact SUV competing in a highly competitive segment and best described as a premium value offering from MG.

MG presented plans to introduce three new products in two new segments, along with new energy variants later this year.

They were, however, tight-lipped about any specifics around the planned introduction of the new variants.

MG3 challenge

A gymkhana challenge in the MG3 at Killarney International Raceway was rather fitting considering its small size and playfulness.

Available in manual and CVT guise, we got the opportunity to experience both transmissions around the gymkhana course.

It’s fitted with a 1.5-litre turbo engine that produces 125kW and 275Nm, accelerating from 0–100 km/h 8.5 seconds with MG quoting consumption figures of 6.9l/100km.

The MG ZS Pro Luxury is fitted with a 12.3-inch dual screen setup.

Driving

Heading up the West Coast in the ZS Pro Luxury with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol mill producing 125kW and 275Nm of torque, the power delivery proved to be quite punchy and responsive.

Overtaking maneuvers en route to Langebaan were quite effortless, with the CVT box making light work when asked to accelerate.

The MG ZS Pro Luxury is fitted with several creature comforts, which made traversing the West Coast a breeze.

These include a 12.3-inch dual screen setup, MG Pilot, which includes forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist.

At its price point, these standard fitted features prove the "premium value" that MG prides itself on.

It was an effortless road-trip and it will be interesting to see what plans they have in store over the next few months.

Pricing and warranty

The MG ZS Pro range is sold with a five-year/60 000km service plan and a 5-year/150 000km warranty.

MG ZS Pro 1.5 CVT Comfort: R397 600.

MG ZS Pro 1.5 CVT Luxury: R431 500.
